Abstract

The study was carried out in six degraded areas of Brachiaria at the Nova Alta Paulista Region, west of São Paulo State, with the objective of evaluate the pastures at different periods of the year. The survey of the information about the properties was realized by visits and interviews with the producers. A representative area (plot) of each property was selected for the study of the pasture and the main evaluations were height, forage mass and botanical composition in 16 samples at three times of the year. In the studied properties most of the area is occupied by pastures, with decreasing order of predominance at Brachiaria decumbens, Brachiaria brizantha and Paspalum notatum. The majority of the properties is characterized as small, it has milk production as main activity and the pastures evaluated presented medium to high degradation degree. The average values found for pasture height were 5.6; 7.6; and 4.3cm and for dry matter forage mass 1,006, 1,378 and 1,001kg ha-1 in December, April and August, respectively. These values were low related to the plants and animals needs, contributing significantly for the process of pastures degradation.
