Abstract

The research was conducted at UNESP-Jaboticabal to evaluate irrigated yellow oats (Avena bysanthina C. Koch) cultivars São Carlos, UPF 87011, and bristle oat (Avena strigosa Schreb) under grazing condition. The plants were sowed at May 29th, 2002; 63 days after sowing the grazing began (July 31st, September 03rd and October 04th by Holstein cows. The pasture were managed according to rotational grazing system, considering the height of swards, respectively, 0.6 m pre grazing, and 0.2 post grazing. The forage allowance, chemical composition, and "in vitro" dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were determined before grazing periods. The data were analyzed according to randomized block design in split plot scheme, considering the oat cultivars in the parcels and grazing periods in sub parcels, with four replications. The São Carlos cultivar showed highest dry matter production, in comparison to the others. The harvest time did not affect the oat dry matter production, however lowest values were observed in the latest evaluation (October 04th). It was observed highest value of CP and IVDMD, and lowest cell compounds of the oat cultivars harvested in July. However, forage harvested in September and October showed lowest CP, and IVDMD, and highest cell wall contents values.
