Abstract

The objective was to evaluate milk quality produced by Holstein cows on coastcross (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pears) pasture fertilized, strategically irrigated and supplemented daily with either 3 or 6 kg of concentrate cow-1 (19.5% CP). The data were collected for three years (October/2000 to October/2003), involving 108 lactations. The randomized block design presented two replicates of area by treatment, nine animals per area and eighteen cows per treatment with a fixed stocking rate of five cows ha-1. The grazing system adopted was rotated stocking with one day€™s enclosures occupation and 25 and 35 days rest, in the raining and dry season, respectively. The pasture was irrigated in the months of poorest rainfall and fertilized with NPK (20-05-20), broadcast in six yearly applications. The milk yields daily average per cow (corrected to 3.5% of fat) were of 16.09 and 19.50 kg, for the concentrate levels of 3 and 6 kg cow day-1, respectively. The milk crude protein values varied significantly in function of the two concentrate levels showing percentages of 2.97% and 3.17%, respectively. The fat, lactose, urea, total solids and somatic cells levels of the milk were not influenced by the concentrate(3 and 6 kg of concentrate cow day-1) indicating that milk quality lies within the normal standards demanded by legislation for use in the industry or for table consumption.
