Abstract

Two trials of metabolism with growing pigs were performed to compare methods of digestibility determination onto protein feedstuffs, testing two reference-diets whose protein contents were above and below animal needs. Two reference-diets were used to measure the digestibility of soybean meal and cottonseed meal. The first one, which was named as alternative, consisted of that reference-diet formulated so that the ingredient-test added kept up the protein balance; another one, named as conventional, a standard reference-diet in which the ingredienttest added turned it an unbalanced diet. There were no significant differences (P > 0.10) neither among the digestibility coefficients of crude protein, gross energy, and dry matter nor among the values of digestible protein, digestible energy, and metabolizable energy of the ingredients at the reference-diets. Even so, the results exhibited percentual and numeric differences that allowed us to infer that using the alternative diet there was an overestimated digestible protein, and using the conventional diet there was an overestimated digestible energy. The alternative diet is more adequate than the conventional one to determine nutrients digestibility of protein feedstuffs for growing pigs.
