Abstract

This study evaluated the effects of phosphorus on the content and concentration of N, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and centrosema (Centrosema pubescens) in a Xantic Ferralsol (dystrophic Red Yellow Latosol). The experimental design was a randomized split-plot design (4 x 4 x 2) with three replications. Four sources (North Carolina rock phosphate, Arad rock phosphate, €œYoorin€ thermophosphate and triple superphosphate), four rates (0, 50, 100 and 200 mg kg-1 of P), and two legumes were studied. Six monthly harvests (sub treatments) were made. The various rates of phosphorus applied increased the total dry matter in alfalfa and Centrosema. The phosphorus rates showed the highest concentration of nitrogen only when the pH of soil was adequate for development of nitrogen fixing nodules in both legumes. The concentrations of cooper, iron and manganese were not affected neither by sources nor by rates of P applied. Phosphorus rates reduced the absorption of zinc in the four sources. The harvest time affected the content and concentration of N, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in the dry matter of alfalfa and centrosema.
