Abstract

In the begining of harvest of 1999 (Spring), the Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Gália, Instituto de Zootecnia, SP, Brazil, carried this study, with the aim of analysing the effect of artificial photoperiod on the larval phase and cocoon production. The treatments, measured in hours (photophase : scotophase), were: 12:12, 14:10 and 16:08, distributed according to the completely randomized experimental design, three times replicated. The photoperiod had effect on the duration of larval period, where the caterpillars reared in the photoperiod: 16 : 08, showed more tardiness in the cycle than the caterpillars reared in the photoperiod: 14:10 and 12:12. With regard to mulberry leaves intake, measured through ínstar average and total average of period, there were not observed variations. The productive characters, cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight, did not present variations.
