Abstract

The work was conducted at Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Gália-SP, Instituto de Zootecnia, during the harvest 1999/2000. The disinfectant (didecilmetil-ammonium cloride) was tested in three dilutions (1mL of product/1000 mL of water, 1mL/550mL and 1mL/100mL) and compared to a control (water), with the treatment applied in two distinct ways: in the mulberry leaves and right on the caterpillar body, before meals. It was used a completely randomized design, in 2X4 factorial scheme, with three replications. The obtained results showed that the treatment where the disinfectant was applied more diluted (1/1000), on the leaves or on the caterpillars, did not affect the silkworm and the produced cocoon, while the treatments where the product was used in the dilutions 1/550 and 1/100, it was observed cocoon shell weight smaller than the control treatment, with reduction on cocoon weight, number of caterpillars that formed cocoons (5,47% less that the control) and a delay in the larval period of 2.06 days regarded to other treatments, when the disinfectant was used in the diluition of 1/100.
