Abstract

An experiment was carried out in glass-house, with two liming levels on a poor acid soil collected under €œcerrado€ vegetation to study the, performance of rhizobia strains on leucaena (L. leucocephala). Liming levels of 1.0 and 1.8 gol dolomitic limestone/kg of soil were used. Each aluminum pot contained 7.0 kg of soil. Strains mantained at the Instituto Agronômico with nº SMS.436 ( =NGR-8), SMS-448, SMS-459 ( =CIAT- 1923), and SMS-461 (= CIAT-1967), were tested The aerial part of the plant and nodule dry weight and nitrogen analysis were made on harvesting 104 days alter planting. Results have shown that the higher level of lime increased dry matter, but not nodulation or nitrogen fixation. There has been no nodule formation on not inoculated treatments. Nodulation induced by strains SMS-436, SMS-448 and SMS -461, corresponded to increases in dry matter production at both liming levels. Strain SMS-459 was not effective in this experiment, since in nodulated but caused no response in plant growth.
