Abstract

The seasonal growth of eight elephant grass (.Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) cultivars, Taiwan A-143 (1), Taiwan A-144 (2). Taiwan A-148 (3). Taiwan A-241 (4), Mineiro (6), Cameron 6), Uruckwami (7) e Napier (8) was determined during two years at the instituto de Zootecnia, Nova Odessa (SP). It was a cutting trial and the results were expressed in terms of: a) crop growth rate as kg of 650C dry matter/ha/day; b) annual production of dry matter c) €œSummer€ and €œWinter€ dry matter production; d) dry matter percentage and crude protein and fiber contents.Cameron showed precociousness starting growth earlier in Spring, napier was the latest. The maximum crop growth rate was obtained in November and the cultivars mineiro, Taiwan A-143 and A-144 were at higher rates. During me critical period of the year (cold and dry) Cameron, Uruckwami, Taiwan A-241 and A-148 were at higher crop growth rata The cultivars Cameron, Uruckwami, Taiwan A-241, A-143 and A-144 gave high annual dry matter yields but the three first one had better seasonal distribution. Napier produced dry matter approximately as to the average of all the grass but had the poorest seasonal distribution of them. Taiwan A-148 gave the lowest dry matter yield (statistically not different of napier) but had the best distribution of the seasonal growth. The figures for itens a, b, c and d are shown in pictures.
