Abstract

A trial was carried out in order to study the filter cake as a feed to ruminants. Some considerations are made on the production and also on the procedures that could improve the quality of cake. The values about this by-product from rotary filters in Sertãozinho (SP), are as follows: dry matter: 27.61%; crude protein: 4.92%; crude fiber: 15.08%; ether tract: 7.07%; nitrogen extract: 45.89% and ashs: 27.04%. The digestibility trials showed that the filter cake from sugar mills could be utilized until 40% of dry content rations to ruminants, however, with a proteinic supplementation due to a very low amount of digestible protein presented in this waste. The elevated rate of mineral matter found in this by-product seems to induce a decreasing of voluntary intake in high filter cake content rations.
