Abstract

The objective of this experiment was lo study a management system that could avoid two problems observed in the production of broilers in cage: breast blister and bona fragility. Four treatments were compared: T1 €” production in floor pens throughout the entire experimental period (0€”63 days); T2, €” brooding the chicks (0€”28 days) in floor pens and moving them to other floor pens for the finishing phase;T3 €” brooding the chicks in cages during a period of 21 days and thereafter in floor pens; and T4 €” as T3, beeing the transference to the floor pens at the 28th day. The space allotments per bird were 172.5 and 1.000cm2 in the cages and floor pens, respectively. Considering the period from 0 to 35 days, the birds on T1 and T2 were havier than the Ones on T4 (P‰¤ 0,05). No statistically significant difference was observed between the weight at the birds on T3 and the others, The treatments did not influence body weight at the 63 days, feed conversion (0€”35 and 35€”63 days), breast blister incidence, ash percentage of the tibia and rate of mortality.
