Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the suitability of simplified methods, commonly used in evrythroenzymology, for the study of enzymatic activities in spermatozoa; this would permit to establish standards of activities in such cells, for the study of their metabolic behaviour in different physiological and experimental conditions. Thus, the activities of hexokinase, phosphoglucoisomerase pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase were determined in sperrnatozoa from Holstein bulls, using nine ejaculates collected from three bulis. The results showed that the methods employed haci good reproductibility, since the variation coefficients of the activities for enzyme were low. It was concluded that the methodology employed may be recommended for establishing standards of enzymatic activities in bull spermatozoa. The values obtained in this paper, however, cannot be considered as representative of a population, since the number of animals was not sufficient for that purpose.
