Abstract

Eighty-eight guzera breeding cows were alloted at randon in two treatments, in order to compare the productive performance of two breeding seasons: A €” May to July (3 months), and B: April to August (5 months). Although not statistically significant, the reduction in the lengh of the breeding season from 5 to 3 months caused an average decrease of 5.41% units (75.18 vs 69.77%) in the rate of fertility during the 3 years of the experiment. Based on the monthly frequency of calving and on liveweight loss from calving to weaning it can be concluded that the difference was due to the supression of the month of April in the 3-month breeding season. It is suggested that under the conditions of this experiment the 3-month breeding season should start in April.
