Abstract

The present trial was carried out at the Estação Experimental de Zootecnia, at Sertãozinho, State of São Paulo, and completes a previous study of the same authors. Its aim was to determine the palatability of eight varieties of elephant grass, Pennisetum purpureum, Schum, for pasture and to measure the production of green matter. The varieties studied were: Taiwan A-146, Mineiro, Porto Rico, Taiwan A-25, Merkeron Comum, Merkeron Mexico, Merker e Taiwan A-143. The evaluation of the palatability was made by one technician through visual observation, before and after the grazing by cattle and the experimental design was randomized complete -blocks, with four replications during two periods: rainfall and dry season. The varieties which showed statistical differences at 1% probability level were: 1) in the rainfall T.A-146 did not differ from M. Comum, T.A-25 and M. Mexico, but was superior to P. Rico, T.A-143, Mineiro and Merker; 2) in the dry season T.A-146 was superior to the others. The result in kilogram of green matter per hectare was: Taiwan A-143 71,802 kg, T.A-146 = 69,791 kg, Mineiro = 57,343 kg, P. Rico = 53,666 kg, Merker = 46,854 kg, M. Comum = 44,968 kg, T.A-25 = 42,657 kg and M. Mexico = 27,270 kg.
