Abstract

The identification of sheep resistant to nematodes is a trend within production systems; however, one must consider productivity since it is not worthwhile to select animals resistant to parasitic action if they do not achieve the production parameters that the market demands. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify production traits and to associate them with phenotypic resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes. The experiment was conducted in the municipality of Herval, RS, from January to August 2014. Thirty Corriedale lambs were used, which were monitored monthly from weaning (5 months) to 12 months of age, and production traits were evaluated. At the end of the evaluations, the animals were divided into three groups: early resistance (ER), late resistance (LR) and non-resistant (NR). No significant difference was observed in any of the production traits. The results suggest that the selection of animals with traces of resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes does not compromise the average productivity of the herd, since none of the body measures indicated unproductivity and 70% of the lambs had the trait that is of most financial importance for the wool. Thus, animals with different phenotypes of resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes are equally productive.
