Abstract

The 484 and 742 calving intervals of 94 and 154 Gir and Guzera breeds, respectively raised in range conditions at Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Sertãozinho, State of São Paulo, Brazil, were studied, also with the same numbers of generation intervals. Calvings occurred from July to December and from July to March due to the breeding season utilized, since 1965 to 1978. Mathematical models including the fixed effects of months and year of calving, age of the dam at calving and the random effects of cow were utilized to analyze the calving intervals and including only the fixed effects of year of claving for the generation intervals. Analyses of variance showed that all fixed efffects were highly significant in both intervals and breeds. The random effects of cow affected significantly (P < 0.01) the calving intervals in Gir breed. The averages and standard deviations for calving intervals were 467.7 ± 139.9 and 486.9 ± 154.9 days (15.4 ± 4.6 and 16.0 ± 5.1 months) and for generation intervals were 2,560.9 ± 781.3 e 2,984.6 ± 921.6 days (7.0 ± 2.1 and 8.2 ± 2.5 years) for Gir and Guzerá breeds, respectively. All fixed effects showed a curvilinear tendency on these intervals probably due to food, reproductive management and animal conditions.
