Abstract

Premature loss of pregnancy (PLP) was studied during sixteen breeding seasons of the Mangalarga mares of the Posto de Eqüideocultura de Colina, State os São Paulo, Brazil. Premature loss of pregnancy was defined as the losses occurring between the fourth and eight week past the last stallion service. During the experimental period 446 mares were studied and 352 (78.9%) of them were pregnant at the first rectal palpation exam four week after the last breeding service. Twenty five (7.1%) of them presented PLP, the incidence of PLP among the non lactating mares was 6.4% and for the lactating mares this value was 7.9%, statistical analysis by the Qui-square test showed that these values were not different (P < 0.05). The mares that concieved for the first time showed high incidence of PLP (50%). Considering that these mares were 36 months old, the authors believe that they may have not been fully developed concerning their reproductive tract and that this fact concurred for the high PLP value.
