Abstract

In order to compare the effect of dried yeast or cotton seed meal, added to roughages Like sugar cane bagasse, plus jaragua-straw and com husks and cobs, 32 Nelore steers averaging 24 months of age and 385 kg of weight, were randomized in four diets as follows: diet A = 40% bagasse, 20% jaragua-straw, 25% ground com grain and 15% dried yeast; diet B = 40% bagasse, 20% jaragua-straw, 25% ground com grain and 15% cotton seed meal; diet C = 60% com husks and cobs, 25% ground com grain and 15% dried yeast; and diet D = 60% com husks and cobs, 25% ground com grain and 15% cotton seed meal. The trial was run for 84 days. Daily dry matter consumption were respectively, from A to D; 1.5, 1.5, 1.8 and 1.8 kg. Average daily gain, per diet and per animal, were in the same ordem: 0.262, 0.149, 0.402 and 0.414 kg. There were no statistical difference between protein sources. Roughage sources differed statistically from each other (P < 0.01).
