Abstract

With the purpose of investigating the best age for immunization, there was utilized 30 Holsteins and 30 €œMantiqueira€ brasilian dairy calves raised at the Estação Experimental Central, of the Instituto de Zootecnia, in Nova Odessa, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Calves, homogeneous by sex and weight, with 7, 14 and 21 days of age, were put in two treatments: immunized and control. Thirty calves of each breed was utilized to produce blood analyses. Results obtained after seven month of experimentation demonstrated a highly significant effect of immunization at 1% level of probability in gain weight. There were no significant differences in gain weight due to ages of immunization. The immunized males had superior gain weight in relation to the immununized females, while the €œMantiqueira€ cattle was superior than Holstein breed at the same level of significance.
