Abstract

In an experiment conducted at the Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Sertãozinho, State of São Paulo, Brazil, informations ebout scrotal circunference (SC) and weights were collected from 143 bullocks of the breeds Gir (13), Guzer (54), Nelore (61) and Caracu (15). The average ages and weights of the animals in the beginning of the experiment were respectively 259 days (approximately 8,5 months) and 189 kilograms. The informations were collected during six intervals of 56 days each, when the animals reached the approximated age of 20 months. The initial age, weight and breed affected significantly (P < 0,01) all measurements of the SC. It was observed positive correlations between weight and SC, showing medium to high values, with a tendency to decrease with increase of live weight. The greater increase in the SC was observed when the animals were 12-14 months of age. The correlations between the SC measurements showed higher values as the animals grew older. In general. the Caracu breed showed highest values of SC while the Nelore showed the smallest. It was observed a greater difference in SC between the Caracu breed and the three Zebu breeds studies, than among the three Zebu breeds them selves.
