Abstract

This work was carried out to evaluate the effects of protein supplementation (cottonseed meal) of pregnant heifers during the dry period (June-July to October) proceeding the second mating season on fertility. Seventy pregnant heifers were divided in two groups: A: dry season pasture plus cottonseed meal (0.513kg/head/day); B: dry season pasture. The calving percentages were: A: 38.7 and B: 42.5% at second calving season and A 80.0 and B85.0% at the third calving season. The protein supplement did not show any effect on fertility in this experiment, where the dry matter availability of the pasture in the beginning of the supplementation period was low (less than 5kg of dry matter of low quality/head/day).
