Estimation of forage availability and nutritive value of a Guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) pasture, during the dry season

Abstract

A digestion trial was conducted to determine the nutritive value and the availability of a Guinea grass €œcolonião€ (Panicum maximum Jacq.) pasture, during the dry season in São Paulo State, Brazil. Three young crossbred Zebu x Holstein bulls were kept in cages during ten days for collection, after eight days of adaptation period to the forage. Fresh chopped ass was fed to the animals after 240, 300 and 360 days growing periods. Digestion coeficients found were as follows: after 240 days: D.M.:42.55%; C.P.: 18.64%; C.F.: 44.73%; E.E.: 40.91%; N.F.E.; 47.54% and T.D.N.: 42.6%; after 300 days: D.M.: 47.09%; C.P.; 14.77%; C.F.: 56.34%; E.E.: 57.24%; N.F.E.: 45.0% and T.D.N,: 46.4% and after 360 days: D.M.: 50.01%; C.P.: 31.54%; C.F.: 57.07%; E.E.: 40.13%; N.F.E.: 48.86% and T.D.N.: 48.1%. Estimations of dry matter availabilities were as follows: after 240 days, 11.730kg/ha; after 300 days, 1 0.700kg/ha and after 360 days, 1 2.350kg/ha.
