Abstract

Some aspects of reproduction of 443 cows of Mantiqueira type born in the farm over five generations by maternal line. daughters of 25 sires, were considered to study the age at first calving (AFC). calving interval (CI), service period (SP), gestation lenght (GL), birth weight (BW) and reproductive efficiency (RE). The overall means and variation coefficient of variation traits were: AFC: 1352.6 days or 44.47 months and 18.46%; CI: 437.0 days or 14.37 months and 23.50%; SP: 153.9 days and 64.6; GL: 280.0 days and 3.1%; BW: 33.68kg and 13.94% and RE (WILCOX et alii, 1957): 83.03% and 16.6%. The effect of generation, studied apart from the effect of year was not significant for any trait. Year of birth for AFC, and year of calvin for CI, PS, GL, BW and RE, were significant in all cases. Month of calving was a significant effect just for GL. Sex of calf was also significant for these two traits, males being carried 1.65 longer and beign born 1.74 kg heavier than females. Age effect for cow, significantly affected SO, GI and BW. It was concluded that the Mantiqueira cattle may be considered a definite ecotype, presenting good values for the reproductive traits and constituting an exclelent alternative for the low management system conditions.
