Abstract

The objectives of the present work, which was carried out at the €œEstação Experimental de Zootecnia de Ribeirão Preto - SP€, were: to study the productive and reproductive performance of a Gir herd selected for milk production and to verify the influency of some environmental factors such as year and season of calving and order of lactation on milk production. The data analysed consisted of informations collected from 1974 to 1986. The overall means, standard deviations and variation coefficients were respectivelly: milk production (kg) 1814.8, 492.4 and 27%; lactation hength (days) 283.0, 35.8 and 13%; fat percentage 4.4,0.5 and 11%; age at first calving (months) 47.8, 16.4 and 34%; calving interval (days) 568.2, 151.0 and 26%; number of services per conception 1.5, 1.0 and 67%; gestation length (days) 288.0, 5.3 and 2%; birth weight (kg) 22.4, 3.1 and 14%. The analysis of variance showed that year of calving and order of lactation significantly affected milk production (P < 0.01). It was shown that there was a positive trend of improvement in the milk production along the years. The best productions were observed around the fourth lactation.
