Abstract

A new sweet maize cultivar named nutrimaiz was studied for pigs during growing and finishing period. Thirty landrace, beign fifty castrated male and fifty female, were assigned to three treatments, were the comum maize was replaced by nutrimaiz m 0%, 50% e 100%. Initial and final average weights were 22.96 ± 3.07 kg and 93.2 ± 9.81 kg. Pigs was slaughtered with 95 kg of live weight. The performance results to 0%, 50% and 100% of replaced were respectively: daily live weigh gain (g) 829, 859 and 821; daily feed intake (g) 2,408, 2,446 and 2,378; feed/weight gain 2.90, 2.86 and 2.89. The carcass characteristics were: killing-out cold (%) 76.1, 76.6 and 76.3; loin eye-area (cm2 ) 32.7535.30 and 33.54; backfat thickness (cm) 3.28, 3.14 and 2.92 (LR P < 0.05); meat-fat ratio (1:fat) 0.80, 0.70 and 0.69; percentage of ham 29.2, 30.6 and 31.4 (LR P < 0.05) and carcass lenght (cm) 100, 98 and 98. Castrated males had higher weight gain (P < 0.01) and feed intake (P < 0.01) than female. The female had better feed gain (P < 0.0 1), loin eye area (P < 0.0 1) and backfat thickness (P < 0.01) than castrated. A interation maize x sex was observed (P < 0.05) for daily weight gain.
