Abstract

This work was carried out at the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias-UNESP-Campus de Jaboticabal. A factorial arrangement was studied according to a split-plot design with the following treatments in the main plots: three spacings (0.90 x 0.90 m; 0.90 x 0.60 m and 0.60 x 0.60 m), two planting dates (November 16 and November 30, 1984), and two varieties (Fava-Larga and Paraíba). Three cuts were made in the sub-plots at 12-week intervals. All leaves, flowers, pods, and branches with a diameter equal or smaller than 5 mm were collected and identified as available forage. Dry -matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) yields were similar in the more closed spacings and higher than those obtained in the 0.90 x 0.90 spacing. The use of the intermediate spacing (0.90 x 0.60) could be recommended because the distance between plants would allow a better circulation of the animals and therefore reduce possible damages caused by trampling. Fava-Larga variety can be recommended for grazing as a reserve crop due to its higher DM and CP yields, higher in vitro DM digestibility, and better distribution of DM yield between cuts, especially when the first planting date is used.
