Abstract

A total of 183 litters from Landrace x Large White sows fed different sources of phosphorus (dicalcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate and Tapira phosphate) were evaluated. The experiment was carried out as a completely randomized block design with three treatments and ten replications. In the suckling period the experimental unit was represented by two pens containing one litter each and in the initial growing phase by two metallic cages containing one litter each, during four reproductive cycles. The statistical model included the effetcs of treatments, blocks, cycles, animals and the treatment x cycle interaction. The basal diets were formulated to contain 20% crude protein in the suckling period and l8% in the initial growing phase. Each litter (suckling) was confined individually with its sow and all sows were weaned after 5-wk lactation period. In the suckling period and in the initial growing phase all piglets were fed ad libitum from the seventh day of age and from day 35 to day 70, respectively. Except for litter mean liveweight at 21 and 35 days old and for piglets at 21 days old, the other characteristics showed no differences (P> 0.05) between the phosphorus sources studied.
