Abstract

In this paper, 24 Santa Inês lactating ewes between the second and de fifth parturition were studied. Milk production through handmilking (method 1) and through liveweíght gains of suckling lambs (method 2) was estimated. The data were collected first to the eighteth lactation week. The average milk production, in grammes, for methods (1) and (2) were, respectively: 395.8 and 320.0; 790.8 and 679.1; 831.6 and 707.5; 810.8 and 745.0; 809.1 and 780.0; 930.8 and 829.1; 592.5 and 553.3; 558.3 and 349.1. There was no significant differences between treatments from the first to de seventh week, while a significant difference (P<0.0 1) was observed in favour of method (2), at the eighth week, when milk production was markedly lower, which was ascribed to the fact that the lambs were already grazing. The milk fat and protein percentages observed in the first, third, fifth, seventh and eighth weeks were 6.45 and 5.85; 6.55 and 4.56; 6.56 and 4.25; 6.00 and 4.83; 6.86 and 5.32, respectivly.
