libido, serving capacity and pregnancy rate in nelore

Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of libido and serving capacity upon pregnancy rates in a Nelore herd, during a mating season of 63 days. Measures of scrotal perimeter and diameter as well as phisical and morphological traits of sperm were registered and correlation were established between these variables. The mean of libido was 3.99±1.32 and of serving capacity was 0.89±0.27. The simple correlation between these two characteristics was 0.62 (P<0.001). The simple correlation between mating behaviour and scrotal perimeter as well sperm quality were close to zero. There were significant differences in the final pregnancy rates between herds served by bulls of high and medium serving capacity (10.8%), but small differences were found between medium and low serving capacity. The used proportion of 1 bull per 40 cows and the pregnancy rates of the examined herds (91.6% and 80.8%) may be an indicator that the mating behaviour tests should be improved in order to obtain specific parameters for nelore cattle.
