Abstract

Non-genetic effects, heritability and genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlations between the weights at birth (BW) 8 months (WW) and 12 months old (YW), daily weight gain from birth to 8 months (DGW) and from birth to 12 months old (DGY) in a Guzera herd were estimated. Data collected from 1979 till 1984 were obtained from the Teaching and Research Farm, Ilha Solteira, UNESP, and referred to 842 calves, progenies of 22 sires, each one with a minimum of 3 offspring. The statistical analysis was done by the least-squares method, using mixed model that included the randon effect of sire and the fixed effects of sex, birth season, birth year of calves, age of dam (class) and interactions between fixed effects. The sex effect was statistically significant on all weights and weight gains studied, while the birth season and birth year did not influence signiflcantily only BW. The age of dam influenced significantily BW, YW and DGY. The milking cow effect on weight, except for BW, and weight gain was also studied and was not statistically significant. Heritability estimates, by paternal half-sib correlation, were: 0.24 ± 0.10; 0.14 ± 0.08; 0.11 ± 0,07; 0.08 ± 0.07 and 0.06 ± 0.06, respectively for BW, WW, DGW, YW and DGY. The estimates of genetic correlation were high and, in general, somewhat lower when involved BW.
