Abstract

Para-grass (Brachiaria mutica (Forsk) Stapf.) and tangola-grass (Brachiaria mutica x Brachiaria arrecta Naper) were evaluated under grazing on poor drained soil conditions at Pindamonhangaba county, São Paulo State. Two grazing pressures, using mantiqueira steers were utilized by rotating the animals in 4 paddocks of each grass species and grazing pressures. The levels of N, P, Ca, Mg, S, Cu and Zn and dry matter availability were determined in stems and leaves of the two grasses in the first year. During the 2rd and 3rd years only CP and D.M. availability were measured. Percentages of CP in the blades were higher (P < 0.01) for para than for tangola grass. In the stems higher (P < 0.05) levels of CP were found on para grass, only during fall and spring time. Forage availability did not differ between the two grasses.
