Abstract

This essay was done at Seção de Agronomia de Plantas Forrageiras of Instituto de Zootecnia, Nova Odessa/SP, Brazil, and the aim was to verify the morphophysiological and agronomic behaviour of three accesses ofStylosanthes guianensis (NO 1336, NO 2262 and NO 2313) selected from the introduction garden besides tjje commercial cultivar named ''Bandeirante". The accesses were sown in a Red-Yellow Podzolic Soil, Laras variation. From 12/29/86up to 05/19/88 the plants were mechanicaly cut at three heights of 10, 20 and 30cm, and it was evaluated the dry matter production (DMP) and the crude protein percentages and production (CP). From 10/30/89 up to 05/04/90 it was also evaluated the plants persistence under grazing. Eighty four days after seed germination all the accesses were established, and covered 75% of the area. During the dry period, when occur lesser forage and nutrients available in the pastures, the access NO 1336 gave the best dry matter and crude protein productions (2.612kg/ha and 475kg/ha, respectively). The best height for cutting was 10cm. The frost and fungi diseases as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, C. dematium and Alternaria tennui, were decisive factors in the persistence of Sty/osanthes guianensis.
