Abstract

This work was carried out at the Posto de Avaliação de Suínos of the Instituto de Zootecnia, Piracicaba - SP, Brazil, to assess the growth and the abrasion of swine hoofs in different floor types and pen management. Four performance tests (from 30 to 90kg of live weight), were conducted in the warm and cold seasons. Seventy-two non castrated Large White males were used, eighteen in each test. The experimental design was completely randomised blocks, with three replications according to a split-plot scheme, where the plots were constituted by two cleaning management (washing and sweeping) and the subplots by three floor types (concret, wood splints-coated concret and rubber plates). Season and cleaning management did not affect (P > 0.05) the characteristics analysed. With regard to floor type. it was observed (P < 0.01) more intensive growth and abrasion of hoofs in the concret floor.
