Abstract

Fertility following insemination at spontaneous or cloprostenol induced oestrus was studied in 19 dairy cows and 17 dairy heifers. Females received intramuscularly (i.m.) one injection of 0, 125 and 500 µg of cloprostenol 10 days post-oestrus. From the animals treated with 500 and 125 µg, 84.6% and 76.9% showed oestrus in a 6 days period (P > 0.05). At the time of insemination, all females showed serum progesterone lower than 1 ng/ml. The pregnancy rate was not statisticaly different in the control, 125 and 500 µg treated animals (50%, 53.9% and 80.0% respectively). These results suggest that one fourth of the conventional cloprostenol dose, injected by in route, can induce fertile oestrus in dairy cicling cows and heifers.
