Abstract

A competition trial for dry matter and crude protein production with six forage legumes and six tropical grasses was carried out at Estação Experimental de Zootecnia, in Sertãozinho county, State of São Paulo, Brazil. It was studied during two years, with and without fertilization, the following forages: Hyparrhenia rufa (Nees) Stapf. - jaraguá grass, Panicum maximum Jacq. var. trichoglume cv. Petrie-green panic, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. - star grass, Setaria anceps Stapf. ex Massey -kazungula setaria, Panicum maximum, Jacq. cv. Gatton Panic, Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Wurth, Macrotyloma axillare (E. Mey), Galactia striata (Jacq.) Urb. galáxia, Calopogonium mucunoides Desv.calopogônio, Neonotonia wightii (Arnott) Lackey cv. Comum - perennial soybean, Neonotonia wightii (Arnott) Lackey cv. Cianova - perennial soybean, Neonotonia wightii (Arnott) Lackey cv. Cooper - perennial soybean. It was apllied: 250 kg of single superphosphate and 390 kg potassium cloride, in all fertilized plots and more 150 kg N per hectare as nitrocalcium only in grass fertilized plots. The results of dry matter and protein yields showed higher production of Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. and Setaria anceps Stapf. ex Massey cv. Kazungula and Neonotonia wightii (Arnott) Lackey cv. Cianova and cv. Cooper. The significant effects of fertilization were observed in every grass studied except for jaragua grass.
