Abstract

Female and male flowers of mulberry (Morus alba L.) were morphologically analysed aiming to complete a previous study that detected a frequent occurrence of monocline flowers, considered a rare event. Flower buds of three clones (IZ 15/1, IZ 15/7 and IZ 56/4) and the Calabresa variety were collected, fixed in acetic ethanol (3:1) and than processed for SEM analysis. Results have shown that IZ 15/1 and IZ 15/7 clones and Calabresa variety presented only dicline-type flowers, whereas the IZ 56/4 clone presented both dicline and monocline flowers, the latter recognized by the rudimentar gymnecea. Other characteristics as cistolite, stomach and trichomas on flower epidermic tissue were also observed.
