Body composition and requirements for calcium and phosphorus for gain and maintenance of Santa Inês lambs with 25 at 35 kg of live weight

The experiment was carried out at the Animal Science Department of Federal University of Lavras with the objective of determining body composition, calcium and phosphorus requirements in Santa Inês lambs. Eighteen entire males lambs with average initial live weight of 25 kg were used. Six animals were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment to access the amount of calcium and phosphorus retained in the body. They were also used as reference animals in the comparative slaughter technique. The remaining animals were divided in two groups:; six animals were ad libitum fed and six were restrict fed. The ad libitum and restrict fed animals began the experimental period in pairs and both were slaughtered when the first reached 35 kg live weight. The body composition was estimated through the prediction equations obtained by regressing the logarithm of calcium and phosphorus in the empty body on the logarithm of empty body weight. Net requirements of calcium and phosphorus for maintenance and absorption coefficient were obtained through the correlation between the amount of each mineral consumed and the amount of each mineral retained in the animal’s body. The net requirements for live weight gain were obtained through derivation of prediction equations. The net requirements of calcium and phosphorus for maintenance in animals between 25 and 35 kg live weight were: 377 mg Ca/day and 304 mg P/day and net requirements for kg of the live weight gain for animals with 25 and 35 kg LW were, respectively: 10.14 and 9.39 g of Ca; 4.69 and 4.31 g of P. The absorption coefficients for calcium and phosphorus were: 0.44 and 0.46, respectively.
