Abstract

This study aims to present an economic and environmental evaluation of sportive fishing at the Piracicaba river basin, São Paulo. The field data and the laboratory analysis of water samples collected during 1996/97 showed a diversity of situations typical of a new activity. The majority of “fish and pay’s” started in the 90’s and was managed by the owners. The charging system adopted was of two types: “fish and pay”, that combines entrance fee and charge/kg of captured fish, and, “pay and fish”, that uses entrance fee as the only tax. The average fish stock density was 1.18 fishes/m2 of managed lake while the average capture rate was 885kg/lake/month. It was observed that pacu, tambaqui, tambacu, tilápias, African catfish, Chinese carps, Hungarian carps, piau, piauçu and curimbatá were present at the majority of "fish and pay". The results showed a high profitability of fish and pay: an average gross revenue over than 100% of direct costs of production and an average net revenue of 46% over the total costs. The results of water quality analyses of "fish and pay" showed that the temperature and the nitrite concentrations met the CONAMA standards. However, the water quality measured by the transparency, dissolved oxygen, saturation of oxygen, pH and the concentrations of nitrate and ammonia was beyond the permitted limits of CONAMA.
