Abstract

Milk production data of Red Sindhi, Guzera e Gyr breeds of cattle were carried out in the Estação Experimental de Zootecnia de Ribeirão Preto, SP, from 1970 to 1976. The cows stayed as pasture all the time, receiving during the dry season, chopped sugar cane (Saccharum offcinarum), elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) and some concentrate. Data were analyzed by least squares method, from 109 lactations of Red Sindhi, 81 of Guzera and 113 of Gyr breeds. Milk production average, standard error and coefficient of variation were, respectively: 1217.44 ± 63.57kg and 54%; 1448.87 ± 55.69kg and 35%; and 1640.93 ± 38.80kg and 25%. Breed, lactation order (p < 0.01) and season (p < 0.05) were significantly different. Lactation period in the same order of breeds were: 269.74 ± 11.42, 274.92 ± 10.00 and 295 ± 6.76 days.
