Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the silkworm performance in small portions used in researches and the regular rearing. The experimental trial was carried out at the Setor de Sericicultura, Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, UNESP, Campus de Jaboticabal, in 2005. The experimental design was completely randomized with ten repetitions. The small portions were formed by 50 larva, reared in small boxes of PVC (35 x 60cm). The regular rearing had 3000 larva reared in boxes, with 80 x 450cm of dimensions. After cocoons confection, were collected 30 cocoons parameters. The results showed that the regular rearing produced cocoons statistically heavier than the small portions, it was not observed differences between the treatments in relation to liquid silk meaning. The regular rearing present better silkworm performance, however this fact not interfere in the research results, all portions are equal and with the same number of larvae per portion.
