Abstract

This research was carried out in order to evaluate allelopathic effects of aqueous extracts (0, 10 and 20%) of three cultivars of Panicum maximum Jacq.: cv. Mombasa, cv. Aruana and cv. Tanzania-1 on three forage legumes: Leucaena leucocephala, Cajanus cajan and Sesbania sesban. The allelopathic effects were evaluated through the percentages of germination, dead and hard seeds, and also by the speed of germination index (SGI). The results allowed the following conclusions: (a) the P. maximum cultivars presented allelopathic potential, which varied depending on the species of forage legume evaluated; (b) the number of hard seeds of sesbania was reduced by the grass extracts especially at the 20% concentration; (c) the data suggest that pigeon pea cannot be interseeded with cv. Tanzânia-1; further research, under field conditions, is required to confirm or not these results obtained under laboratory conditions.
