Abstract

The grazing experiment was carried out during four years at Itapetininga county, aiming to select among four different mixed pastures the one(s) more suitable for the South Part of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. It was used the continuons grazing system with varying stocking rates along the year. For the pattern mixed pasture (green panic + perennial soybean) the predicted stocking rate for the maximum llveweight daily gain per hectare, during the raining season, was 1.33 AU/ha, with liveweight daily gains of 504 g /AU and 670 g/ha, being the amount of forage on offer in terms of dry matter to 191 kg/Au and 254 kg/ha. During the dry winter period the stocking rate was estimated to be 0.55 AU/ha, with the liveweight daily gains of 300 g/AU and 165 g/ha, being maintained under grazing 1,315 kg/AU and 724 kg/ha of forage on ofter. Comparing the potential animal production of the pattern mixture with the other mixed pastures studied, it was verified by the results of co-variance analysis that they did not differ statistically in the raining period, althought in the dry season the production per AU in guinea grass plus Desmodium uncinatum pasture was superior (P < 0.05).
