Abstract

The objetive of this paper was to verify the possibility of estimating the heritability of cattle tick resistance by counting females of Boophilus microplus tick bigger than 4.5 mm at the front region of only one side of the animal; the region comprises the extension from the head to the scapula, including the arm. Countigs were made in a crossbred herd at Colina, north of São Paulo State, Brazil. Countings were made in animals two months old or elder, in the middle of each season, during a year (winter 1985 to fall 1986). The numbers of ticks counted in the front region (AC) and in the hole animal side (TC) were transformed for log 2 (x+1) and analised by the method of Least Squares, considering the aleatory effect of sire and fixed effects of season, sex, age, pasture manajement and forage species. A high genetic correlation between AC and TC was found (90,9%) and te heritability estimatives were 0.075ae 0,049 and 0.085ae0,051 for AC and TC, respectively, The results showed that it is possible to use this method to acess the genetic resistance of a herd to the cattle tick.
